Diabetes in India

Changing lifestyles, obesity and genetic susceptibility are all contributing factors to the increased incidence of diabetes in India.  The country has one of the highest recorded numbers of people with diabetes in the world with perhaps 60 million cases. However, unlike the USA and Europe, only about 1/3 of cases are overweight at diagnosis, which is happening at younger ages than in the West.  Scientists think babies undernourished in their mother’s womb are at increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in early adulthood.
